“The progress of the world will call for the best that all of us have to give.” – Mary McLeod Bethune
Everything you needed to learn about collaboration you actually learned in kindergarten. In kindergarten (and the few years after) we were taught to share, take turns, say "sorry", use our words, settle down for naps, and listen when others were speaking. Somehow, between kindergarten and becoming serious adults, we forgot to practice these basics. If we want to learn to collaborate well in our current roles, we have to learn the basics again.
Collaboration is a leadership practice and process based in relationships. As a leadership practice collaboration is the ability to consciously work with others in service to common goals. As a leadership process it is the commitment to co-designing and co-implementing practices and procedures that authentically reflect the vision and values of everyone involved. Together, when collaborative practices and procedures are enacted, we identify and ensure shared, intentional and aligned paths to addressing challenges and meeting collective needs and wants. Hence, we all get a nap and cookies in the end.
Whether cultivating collaboration or creating a formal collaborative, I work with you and potential partners to develop the basics again and implement a course of action that supports your goals. Together our focused will help you develop the skill needed to honor everyone involved, build trust, and create momentum while achieving mutually beneficial goals and outcomes. And again, there's a nap and cookies in it for everyone!
